Chapter 8
Why did the smell of burned beans linger so long? Abbie waved a hand in front of her nose. After her first attempt at cooking beans, she thought sheâd learned her lesson since she hadnât burned any for over a week, until today. It was too cold outside to open the windows, and the stench lingered even after sheâd thrown out the bottom layer and washed the pan. How the water had evaporated so fast, she didnât know, but as soon as sheâd gotten the whiff of scorch, sheâd known what was wrong and had come running. Now her transgression hung in the air as if to tattle on her. Oh well, maybe it would be gone before Robert got home.
She should bake something special for him to make up for it. Eva had stopped by yesterday and suggested they have a lesson in bread making. Abbie was thrilled for the chance to learn something new. Although Robert hadnât complained yet, she imagined he was getting pretty tired of eating his meals without white bread. Her few attempts at making biscuits had been utter failures. Why it had to be so hard, she didnât know. So far, cornbread had been all sheâd managed.
Eva wasnât the best teacher, though, as she plowed through the lesson, doing most of the work while Abbie ran here and there supplying her with the ingredients she needed or a measuring spoon or cup. All Abbie learned was that making bread looked even more complicated than sheâd imagined.
Oh, but theyâd had a grand time talking about their school days in New York and the kids they used to know. Laughter filled the kitchen while the dust of flour covered their work table. When Abbie pulled two loaves of golden brown bread from the oven, she insisted Eva take one home for her supper. Then theyâd cut into Abbieâs loaf and slathered butter over the hot bread. Abbie declared it the best bread sheâd ever eaten, amazed she had anything to do with it. Of course, she really hadnât, and without better instruction, sheâd never be able to repeat the performance.
But that was yesterday, and she wanted to make something special for Robert today. Their house was clean. Sheâd finished his shirt and had her dress well started. There really wasnât enough to keep her busy during the day, but she was content. Well, almost, because she sensed something was wrong with Robert, and she couldnât put her finger on the problem.
He treated her with gentleness and never complained when the food she set before him lacked in either taste or appearance. His kisses were sweet and loving, and his touches filled her heart with love for him. But he didnât seem at peace, and she didnât know why. If only she could help him with more than keeping his records, but heâd made it clear he didnât want her near the warehouse without him, and he spent even less time in his office now that he didnât have to work with the ledger and try to decipher the menâs notes.
